Choosing to carry it forward, not rebuild.
A 65-year-old home passed down since the grandfather’s generation. Rebuilding was considered given its age, but the family chose instead to carry this home forward to the next generation. The project began by examining the columns and beams of the whole house and discerning what could be kept.
The Japanese room features an arched alcove and shoji screens that invite in soft light. The stairs and fittings make the most of the texture of wood, while the bath, restroom, and washroom were renewed for modern comfort. Old and new resonate quietly within one home.
Bold where change was needed, careful where things should remain. Inheriting time across three generations, this home was prepared in both structure and design so that generations to come can carry it on further still.
